Bernie Sanders' Call to Action After Horrifying Shooting

"...We have got to do something.  We have to stop shouting at each other..."

Once again, devastation hits another American school.  On the first day of October a shooting broke out at Umpqua Community College, leaving the country to watch headlines in utter horror as the death toll rose to ten.
Bernie Sanders addressed this tragedy several times on an interview with Chris Hayes on MSNBC and through several Facebook posts.  As quoted on one of his Facebook posts, he, along with fellow Americans, are, "horrified by these never-ending mass shootings."  Bernie Sanders declares that we must stop "shouting at each other", we must stop arguing and pointing fingers, and find a way to put an end to these ever-more constant and senseless shootings.  Instead of fighting with each other, he wishes that we would eliminate the loopholes in gun legislation in order to make sure that, "guns should not be in the hands of people who should not have them", which would include those who have criminal records or are mentally ill.  Not only that, but he believes that weapons that were specifically designed to kill people shouldn't even be handed out to the public.  Though, in order to keep the guns out of the hands of those who should not have them we need a much stronger background check system.  As for those with mental illnesses, he calls for America to significantly improve their mental health facilities' abilities to aid those who are in need of psychological help.  His last appeal is to lower the amount of surprising violence that is portrayed throughout America's media, in effort to keep it from happening again.

  1. I am glad that Bernie wants to fix the loopholes, which might help his campaign as well.

  2. It looks to me like Bernie Sanders really wants to accomplish a lot. And I'm definitely agreeing on his point of view on how to handle the shootings that never seem to end in this country.
But what I think is that it would be a little to difficult to reach the goals that he has set.

  3. Personally I agree with Bernie, people do need to get a background check before being handed a gun. But then you do have to follow the constitution, we are equals. What if a man from jail has a former gang man that wants to kill him and he is trying to protect himself, hows he going to do that if that right is taken away from him? What if he actually changed his life around? But yes we do need to something about all these shootings lately!

  4. I see where Bernie Sanders is going with his comments, but I don't think that background checks are going to solve the problem. The Oregon shooter passed the background check and legally owned his gun. Besides, the number of people who own a gun and actually use it to murder is very low. If a person really wanted to kill a group of people, a gun law wouldnt stop him. Ben Carson said that the Holocaust could have been prevented if the citizens owned guns. Also, much less people could have died in Oregon if a student in the school had a gun on him. But I respect Sanders for trying to lower the amount of gun violence in the country.

  5. Yes I agree, shouting and pointing fingers will get you nowhere. Bernie brings up a good point there.

  6. Sanders reaction to the shooting was very presidential like. Unlike Jeb Bush's comment with "stuff happens" he takes action to what happened. I admire that he said we must stop the violence and blaming each other; I also agree with his gun policies, however with his gun policies I think that there is still going to be loop holes. How is one going to know who is mentally ill with no medical evidence nor history? There is always going to be people selling guns behind the governments back but I like how Sanders is arguing that we must put an end to this. If Sanders can make an end to these tragic shootings, then the United States can really benefit from that.

  7. I believe in Sanders that yes we must keep weapons away from people who should not be handling it. However, in todays day and society it is so hard to keep track of everything that goes around the world. And America has put the lives and dangers of one another, whether there are weapons involved or not. I believe that is the hardest issue, whether we have weapons or not there will always be violence in society. However, like Sanders said, we should stop blaming one another and watching each die day by day but instead take new action.
