Bernie Sanders' Position on Guns

"Bernie Sanders believes that gun control is largely a state issue because attitudes and actions with regards to firearms differ greatly between rural and urban communities. Nevertheless, Bernie believes there are situations where the federal government should intervene. He voted in favor of requiring background checks to prevent firearms from getting into the hands of felons and the mentally ill, passing a federal ban on assault weapons, and closing loopholes which allows private sellers at gun shows and on the internet to sell to individuals without background checks."

  1. I do not believe that we should totally get rid of guns. We have gone so far in the issue of gun control that people sometimes need guns for the protection of the lives of themselves. I believe that we should definitely keep guns away from felons and the mentally ill but keep guns for people who want to protect their own lives and people who go through testing and training to hold such weapons.

  2. I think it's great that he's really trying to solve this problem instead of just talking about it. Maybe it won't get rid of the problems completely but I'm sure that it will definitely help some. His actions show his dedication to follow out his promises to the people.

  3. I totally agree with his stance on guns because if the government required more of a serious background check then guns would be hardly fall into the hands of the mentally ill or felons.

  4. I agree with Sanders on closing gun show loopholes and restrictions on assault weapons. However, in my perfect world there would be EXTREMELY strict gun control laws. You can point at any democratic country with extreme gun control laws and immediately see a reduction in gun crime. More Americans have died from domestic gun related violence since 1968 than in all of the United States' wars combined. This statistic shows a stark comparison between the United States and countries such as Japan and South Korea which average .06 gun related deaths per year.
All stats are pulled from PEW and UNODC

  5. It's good to hear that Bernie Sanders is in favor to implement these requirements to be able to own a gun, because there's a lot of individuals out there with bad intentions who should not own firearms.

  6. As American's, our ability to buy and own guns is a protected right, but I strongly believe that we need to do some regulating. The stats Patrick gave above are frightening, and people are just going to keep dying unless we do something about it.
